NIT Kurukshetra

The Central Government in consultation with the Planning Commission had sanctioned a scheme for establishment of Regional Engineering Colleges under the Third Five Year Plan in order to expand the facilities for technical education in the country during the plan period. The Regional Engineering College, Kurukshetra was one of the seventeen colleges in the country. National Institute of Technology, Kurukshetra became Deemed University receiving NIT status on June 26, 2002. The institute was ranked 58th in NIRF in 2023 among Engineering institutes in India.


Kurukshetra

Kurukshetra is known as DHARAMKSHETRA, with historical and religious importance. Here, the battle of Mahabharata was fought, and Lord Krishna preached the philosophy of “KARMA” as enshrined in the holy book “Shrimad Bhagwad Gita”. Kurukshetra is very well connected by Road, Rail and Air. NIT Kurukshetra is situated about 10 km from Pipli bus stand located on NH-44, and 5 km from Kurukshetra Railway Station. Nearby airports are New Delhi and Chandigarh. Importance historical places in Kurukshetra are: Brahma Sarovar, Jyotisar, Bhadra Kali Temple, Sri Krishna Museum, Science Panorama Centre, Shaikh Chaheli’s Tomb, Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple, etc

Department of Architecture and Planning (DoAP)

The Department of Architecture and Planning (DoAP) of NIT- Kurukshetra has started functioning from the year 2024, admitting students to Five Years Full Time B. Arch. Degree program approved by the Council of Architecture, New Delhi. The institute is committed as its earlier practice to prepare youngsters as core professionals in the field of architecture. DoAP offers a conducive environment and exposure to core and allied learning requirements through practical and experimental exposure targets towards excellence. Our TEAM of experienced faculty guide the students individually to nurture their talent and creativity in rigorous studios, which is the strength of architectural education.



Places to Visit

Jyotisar

The revered spot where Lord Krishna is believed to have delivered the eternal message of the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna under an ancient banyan tree before the great battle. A chariot sculpture symbolising the event is present. A daily light and sound show in the evening narrates episodes from the epic Mahabharata.


Brahma Sarovar

One of Asia's largest man-made sacred water tanks, believed to be the spot where Lord Brahma created the universe. Taking a dip here, especially during a solar eclipse or the annual Gita Jayanti festival, is considered highly auspicious. The Sarveshwar Mahadev temple is located on an island in the center.


Sannihit Sarovar

This sacred water body is believed to be the meeting point of seven holy Saraswati rivers and the permanent abode of Lord Vishnu. Devotees perform pind daan here for the salvation of ancestors, particularly during Amavasya (new moon) days or solar eclipses. It is surrounded by several small temples.


Bhadrakali Shaktipitha

A significant ancient temple dedicated to Goddess Kali, it is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas where the ankle of Goddess Sati is believed to have fallen. It attracts numerous devotees, especially during the Navratri festival.






Sthanvishwar Mahadev Temple

An ancient temple of Lord Shiva where Lord Krishna and the Pandavas are said to have worshipped Shiva before the Mahabharata war for victory. It is considered older than the city of Kurukshetra itself.


Bhishma Kund, Narkatari

This is the site where Pitamaha Bhishma lay on a "bed of arrows" during the battle. When he felt thirsty, Arjuna shot an arrow into the ground, creating a gushing stream of water (the Banganga) that formed this kund (pond).

Shri Venkateswara Swamy Tirupati Balaji Temple Kurukshetra

The Shri Venkateswara Swamy Temple, also known as the Tirupati Balaji Temple, is located in Thanesar, Kurukshetra, near the Brahamsarovar. It is a serene and beautiful temple that features a south Indian architectural design and includes other shrines like the Lakshmi Mata Mandir and Goda/Bhu Devi Mandir. The temple is known for its peaceful atmosphere and is accessible to visitors.

Gita Gyan Sansthanam, Kurukshetra

Gita Gyan Santhanam is a center for Gita research, spreading its application in various fields, with a Gurukul, library, museum, and light show
